​Persons with Disabilities Homestead Exemption
What does this exemption do?
This exemption reduces the Equalized Assessed Value (EAV) by $2,000 for the current tax year.
Who can qualify for this exemption?
To be eligible, the taxpayer must be unable to engage in any substantial gainful activity due to a medically determinable physical or mental impairment expected to result in death or last at least 12 months. A person becoming disabled during the assessment year is eligible in that same year.
Documents required to qualify for this application:
First-time applicants must provide one of the following. Proof of disability must be for the same year as the assessment year.

A Class 2 or 2A Illinois Persons with Disabilities Identification Card from the Illinois Secretary of State.

Note: Class 1 or 1A does not qualify.

Proof of Social Security Administration disability benefits
(award letter, verification letter, or COLA letter for the current year).

Proof of Veterans Administration disability benefits
(award or verification letter for a non-service connected disability pension).

Proof of Railroad or Civil Service disability benefits
(verification of total (100%) disability).

Physician’s affidavit (Form PTAX-343A) completed by a licensed Illinois physician.

The taxpayer must occupy the property as their primary residence as of January 1 of the assessment year, be liable for property taxes, and have an ownership interest documented in writing.
A taxpayer may not claim this exemption if they receive the Disabled Veterans Homestead Exemption (35 ILCS 200/15-169).
