Board of Review Information
The Kane County Board of Review is the local authority responsible for overseeing property tax assessments and exemptions within Kane County, Illinois. Its primary role is to ensure that property assessments be fair and equitable. The Board reviews assessment complaints submitted by property owners and evaluates requests for exemptions, helping maintain equitable taxation across the county.
Property owners may file complaints for several reasons, including:
- overvaluation of their property,
- inequitable assessments compared to similar properties
- errors in physical property data (such as incorrect square footage or lot size), or
- eligibility for preferential assessment programs that reduce taxable value.
The Board carefully examines all evidence provided by the property owner and township assessor before making an informed determination.
The Board consists of three appointed members who collectively review cases and make decisions based on the evidence presented by the taxpayer and the assessing official. The Board has the authority to
increase, decrease, or confirm property assessments, and approve or deny exemptions based on its review.
